“We keep making the assumption that we’re doing the right things and that people are deeply engaged at work. And the truth is, a large percentage of them aren’t.

-Scott Mautz

Every year, the Gallup Organization conducts a study that surveys employee engagement at companies across the nation. And every year for the last three years the survey results have come back the same: roughly 70 percent of the American workforce is disengaged at work. What’s worse, among that 70 percent, 20 percent are “actively disengaged” which means they actually engage in sabotaging behaviors at work.

Faced with such dire statistics, how can business leaders improve employee engagement within their own companies, and foster a more fulfilling work environment?

On today’s episode, I talk to author, speaker and executive trainer Scott Mautz about modern-day leadership and what it really takes to lead today’s mostly millennial workforce.

Scott believes all great leaders can and should inspire their employee to find meaning and purpose in their work. Great leaders, he says, can unleash employees’ deepest desires for contribution by tapping into their values and instilling a sense of pride in the work they do.

“People are looking for more than a paycheck,” Scott says. “They’re looking for more than the promotion, they’re looking for more than the perks, they’re looking for work that truly matters.”

Today, we talk specifically about why leaders miss the mark when trying to incentivize employees, how “non-negotiable” values play a role in employees’ performance and why talking about goals can backfire when trying to motivate a team.

“Leaders often miss the fact that they have the opportunity to reframe the work their people are doing to help it be more meaningful, more substantial and more fulfilling than it is on a day to day basis,” Scott points out.

“We keep making the assumption that we’re doing the right things and that people are deeply engaged at work. And the truth is, a large percentage of them aren’t,” he says.

“As leaders we have a chance to reframe what people are doing and why it matters and to create goals that have intrinsic value, rather than the…”let’s reach 200 million dollars in sales,” Scott says. “Who really cares about that goal?”

In this episode, Michael talks about:

  • Specific ways leaders can imbue purpose and meaning into their employees’ work.
  • How to make anyone care about the goals of the company (it’s not what you think).
  • Why giving employees autonomy is more effective than giving them perks .
  • Why giving employees room to fail leads to better results – and the science to back it up.

“When leaders realize it’s not about them it’s about helping others become a better version of themselves and becoming more fulfilled in their place of work, I can promise you the business goals…will be met,” Scott says.
